Chhattisgarh faces 92 Extreme Weather Days in 2024

Raipur | Correspondent: India has faced an extreme weather event on 93 percent of days in the first 9 months of this year, marked by heat, cold waves, cyclones, lightening, heavy rains, floods and landslides.

Of the 274 days, the country has recorded a total of 255 days with extreme weather conditions from January 1 to September 30.

In a recent report titled ‘Climate India: 2024, An Assessment of Extreme Weather Events’ by the Center for Science and Environment.

This analysis is based on data from the Meteorological Department of the Government of India and the Disaster Management Department of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

According to the report, these events claimed 3,238 lives, affected 3.2 million hectares of crops, destroyed 235,862 houses, and killed approximately 9,457 animals.

Condition in Chhattisgarh

A recent report highlights that Central India experienced 218 extreme weather days out of 274 days from January 1 to September 30, 2024.

During this period, 1,001 people lost their lives, and 2.08 million hectares of crops were damaged.

In Chhattisgarh alone, there were 92 extreme weather days out of 274, compared to 77 during the same period in 2023.

This year, heavy rains and extreme heat led to the deaths of 110 people and 54 animals, with at least 1,533 houses damaged.

Lightning and storms struck on 48 days, resulting in 62 deaths. Additionally, floods and heavy rains lasted 51 days, causing 41 fatalities.

Extreme heat and heatwaves contributed to seven more deaths over 10 days.

Extreme weather days surge in Central India

The report reveals all the regions of India has witnesses an extreme weather day over the past three years, with Central India being most affected.

In 2024, the region faced 218 days of extreme weather conditions.

The surge in severe weather has led to major crop losses, underscoring the severe impact o the climate change on the farmers.
