New Delhi Desk: Arvind Kejriwal has announced that he will step down as Delhi’s Chief Minister in two days. Meanwhile, the opposition BJP has dismissed the move as a “PR stunt.”
Speaking at the Aam Aadmi Party headquarters, Kejriwal said, “I am resigning from the Chief Minister’s post, and I will not return until the public delivers its verdict.”
He emphasized that Delhi is due for elections in February but called for early elections in November, alongside the Maharashtra polls.
“I will go to the people, visit every street, every household, and I will not return to the Chief Minister’s chair until the public declares me honest,” Kejriwal stated, pledging to seek the people’s mandate.
He also thanked his supporters, saying, “I express my gratitude to the lakhs of people who prayed for me while I was in jail. I had ample time to read, during which I studied the Ramayana, Mahabharata, the Gita, and Bhagat Singh’s jail diary.”
Kejriwal accused the Lieutenant Governor of obstructing his work, saying, “I wrote to the LG from jail, requesting that Atishi be allowed to hoist the flag in my place. Instead, I was threatened that if I made another request, I would not be allowed to meet my family.”
He also blamed the central government for his imprisonment, claiming it was an attempt to break the Aam Aadmi Party and intimidate him. “But my time in jail only strengthened my resolve. I did not resign from jail because I wanted to uphold the country’s democracy. I proved that governance can continue even from jail.”
Kejriwal urged non-BJP Chief Ministers not to step down if the Prime Minister sends them to jail. “We must all fight together,” he said. “They tried to break the government with a majority, but the Aam Aadmi Party has foiled their plan.”
He also clarified that neither Manish Sisodia nor anyone else would take over as Chief Minister, saying that the decision would rest with the party’s MLAs.
Meanwhile, the BJP dismissed Kejriwal’s announcement as a publicity stunt. BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari said, “The Aam Aadmi Party is now synonymous with corruption. This PR stunt is merely an attempt to restore their tarnished image.”
