Mumbai | Desk: Iconic film actor Mithun Chakraborty expressed deep emotions upon the announcement of being conferred with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, one of the highest honours in Indian cinema.
Reflecting on his journey, Mithun said, “For someone like me, who rose from the streets of Kolkata, this is an unimaginable achievement. This honour is dedicated to my family and my unwavering supporters.”
Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared the news via Twitter, stating, “Mithun Da’s cinematic journey has been extraordinary, and it will continue to inspire generations. The Dadasaheb Phalke Selection Jury has decided to honour this great actor, Mithun Chakraborty ji, for his significant contribution to Indian cinema.”
The formal ceremony, where Mithun will receive the award, is scheduled for October 8, during the official proceedings of the 70th National Film Awards.
After the announcement, an overwhelmed Mithun said, “I have no words to express my emotions. I neither know whether to laugh nor cry with joy. Coming from the footpaths of Kolkata to receiving this honour is beyond my wildest dreams.”
Mithun Chakraborty’s journey is nothing short of inspirational. Recalling his early years, Mithun said, “In my career spanning decades, I have seen many highs and lows, but the memories of my early days have always kept me grounded. They shaped me into who I am today, reminding me to stay humble and work harder.”
Mithun’s foray into acting began with the critically acclaimed film “Mrigaya” in 1976, directed by legendary filmmaker Mrinal Sen.
The film not only marked Mithun’s debut but also earned him the National Film Award for Best Actor. This was a testament to his immense talent and powerful screen presence, setting the stage for what would become a celebrated and enduring career.
While Mithun excelled in various genres, it was his role in “Disco Dancer” (1982) that catapulted him to stardom, cementing his place as a household name.

In addition to his film career, Mithun Chakraborty has also been active in politics, aligning himself with the Bharatiya Janata Party in recent years.
Mithun Chakraborty entered politics and served as a Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) for the Trinamool Congress from 2014 to 2016.
Later, in 2021, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party and actively campaigned in the West Bengal assembly elections.
Mithun made his acting debut with Mrigayaa” (1976), directed by Mrinal Sen. He won his first National Film Award for Best Actor for his outstanding performance.
Mithun won another National Film Award for his portrayal of an emotionally disturbed freedom fighter in the movie “Tahader Katha” (1993).
He played the role of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa in this biographical film and earned critical acclaim, along with another National Award in “Swami Vivekananda” (1998).
Mithun Chakraborty holds the record for appearing in the most number of films as a lead actor. He has acted in over 350 films, in Hindi, Bengali, and other regional languages.
Mithun is also a successful entrepreneur. He owns several luxury hotels and resorts, including the famous Monarch Group of Hotels in Ooty, Tamil Nadu, and other locations.
